Does using a processor for a long time reduce its speed? POSTED ON March 14, 2022 by Arup Ratan Paul

Does using a processor for a long time reduce its speed?

The speed of the processor depends on the clock cycle. The clock cycle of the processor works to coordinate all the work of the computer system. The lower the clock cycle, the lower the computer speed.

This clock cycle of the processor is made by means of a crystal oscillator. These are some of the substances that generate electrical vibrations (e.g., through batteries) when they provide electrical energy. All these substances can decay for various reasons. Due to atmospheric or chemical pollution (simple examples like cigarette smoke), prolonged use of circuit junctions, etc., these substances erode or their electrical charge gradually decreases. As the electric charge decreases, the substances continue to decrease in electrical vibration or electronic oscillation. Then the clock cycle dependent on these substances also decreases.

However, the rate of decay of the crystal oscillator is very slow. The loss of a computer in ten years of normal use will not actually have much effect on its speed.

But, we see that after one or two years of use, the speed of the computer decreases. So, why is this?

This is because it has a heat sink on the processor due to the accumulation of dirt in it. Heat sink keeps the processor cool. It cannot keep the processor as cold as before if dirt accumulates in the heat sink and its fan. As a result, the speed of the processor decreases. Thermal paste at the junction of the heat sink and the processor can also slow down the processor. Drossy thermal paste dries in the heat of the processor. As a result heat from the processor cannot go to the heat sink.

Your computer's cache memory can slow down the processor. All the processors in the world can do one thing at a time. Processor multiprocessing and multithreading can be done through a variety of hardware and software solutions. As a result, the processor can do many things at the same time. Now if you have a lot of data stored in your computer's cache memory, then the processor has to be busy processing this data, because the processor can not give cache space to other processes due to occupying cache memory. As a result, the speed of the processor decreases. In most cases, this is one of the reasons for slowing down the processor.

Now the straightforward answer to our question is, yes, using it for a long time slows down the processor. But this low speed cannot be comprehended. Usually the low speed that we understand is not due to the slow down of the processor in most cases, it is due to the unnecessary use of various background processes and cache memory.
