Measure the height of your current optical drive before buying. The two standard sizes are 9.5mm (most laptops made after 2012) and 12.7mm (older/larger laptops). Buying the wrong size means the caddy will not fit flush in the bay.

Both 2.5" HDDs and SSDs are compatible with standard SATA caddies. If you are installing an SSD, you also need to confirm the SSD thickness - 7mm SSDs fit directly; 9.5mm SSDs need a spacer or a 9.5mm caddy.

Most caddies use SATA II (3Gbps). If you are installing an SSD and want full speed, confirm the caddy supports SATA III (6Gbps). Speed is capped at the caddy's SATA interface, not the SSD's spec alone.

Caddies fit most HP, Dell, Lenovo, and ASUS laptops. However, some ultrabooks and thin-and-light models do not have an ODD bay at all. Confirm before purchasing. Blade-style thin laptops, for example Dell XPS 15 post-2016 and most modern ASUS ROG, do not use standard caddies.

Aluminum caddies dissipate heat better and feel more solid. Plastic caddies are lighter and cheaper. For HDDs, aluminum is preferable because HDDs generate more heat than SSDs during use.

Most caddies include a universal faceplate, and the original DVD drive faceplate can usually be transferred onto the caddy for a seamless look. Confirm this in the product spec if appearance matters.
